Programs and Events, This Year

Wednesday, February 26, 2025: Gabrielle Fowlkes leads a discussion of The Quality of our Endeavors: A Critique.  In person at Beachwood Branch Library, 25501 Shaker Boulevard in Beachwood, Ohio, or on Zoom at 6:45 pm
January 2025: One Family’s Separation by Race

Each  January our nation celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. and those who contribute to ending racial segregation and promoting equality. We value those who continue this cause. The HHL Branch community will discuss Lisa Sharon Harper’s book Fortune: How Race Broke my Family and the World—and How to Repair It.

Join with us to discuss our collective vision and desire to eliminate the sharp contrast between the quality of life for marginalized and hated people in comparison to the life the volatile ‘them’ dedicated to the concept of Whiteness denies to the majority of Americans, and not just the colored ones.

November 20, 2024: How to Move the Equal Rights Amendment Forward

Carolyn Casper, President of the Ohio National Organization for Women and a long term partner of the ERA Coalition, helped us understand the Equal Rights Amendment and How We Move it Forward. AAUW HHL gathered in person and on Zoom on Wednesday, November 20 at 7pm to learn from Jennifer Tucker and Carolyn whose vision is that the Equal Rights Amendment will become part of the US Constitution and who work to get it done before January 20, 2025.

Carolyn stated, “There can be no free men until there are free women. We are all caught in a trap. It is not good for any of us.”

Attendees accepted the challenge that each of us will contact the White House and Congress each day by phone, text, or email. Join us in taking action. Call (202) 456-1111 and text (302) 404-0880 the White House and demand that the ERA becomes reality. Volunteers answer calls Tuesday through Thursday.

Cleveland Public Theater’s performance of The Elephant in the Room sparked compassion and discussion when HHL attended a performance November 17. Written by and featuring Priyanka Shetty and presented by Cleveland Public Theatre and Federation of India Community Associations Cleveland, the play is a witty, dark comedy about just your typical Indian metalhead and software-engineer-turned-actor who must navigate life as an immigrant arriving in Trump’s America. The play navigates Priyanka’s real-life journey as she transitions from her deeply embedded roots in India to finding context and common ground in America.
